Abstract

“Le golose” was first published in La Gazzetta del Popolo on July 28th 1907. The poem describes a scene from everyday life, where a group of women of different ages are busy choosing pastries at the renowned confectioner’s Baratti in Turin. This description, which is only seemingly superficial, offers interesting interpretations: one is strictly connected with the well-known dispute between Gozzano and D’Annunzio, which here takes on strongly ironic accents, the other is a possible reading of the poem through an erotic perspective, which is, maybe, influenced by Freud’s recent studies on psychoanalysis. “Le golose” shows Gozzano’s great skill as a poet, since he is capable of talking about Eros with incredible lightness, he is a master of irony and much more than the writer of a simple humble poem, as he himself would like his readers to believe.
