Abstract

Machiavelli was a central author of reference in the 20th century both in the
fields of politics and philosophy as well as in literary studies and philological
criticism. This paper focuses on Gramsci’s reading of Machiavelli. Gramsci
intuits, without allowing himself to be taken in by superficial interpretations of
The Prince, the modernity and utility of Machiavelli’s writings, especially in
Italy during Gramsci’s time. By confronting Machiavelli, Gramsci redefines the
meaning of political struggle in Western society and discovers the bases for
the future success of socialism/communism.
