WILLIAM FAULKNER IN EUROPA, IN ITALIA E NELLE RIFLESSIONI DI CESARE PAVESE

Abstract

After a short survey of the reactions to William Faulkner’s production in Europe, the article analyses Faulkner’s reception in Italy, the attitudes Italian critics and intellectuals showed towards his fiction and the different strategies that have been adopted in the translation of his most important works into Italian over the years. Cesare Pavese, whose interest in US literature is well known, seems not to have paid great attention to William Faulkner and his relationship with this US writer mainly relies on the (negative) review on Sanctuary and the translation of the novel The Hamlet (1940) as Il borgo (1942).
